Do I Really Need a Website for My Small Business?
You have Instagram and a Google listing. Is a website still worth it? An honest answer — including when you don't need one yet.
A website is not magic. On its own, it won't bring customers. But for most businesses that depend on people finding them, trusting them and contacting them, a website quietly does work that social media and listings can't.
The short answer
If customers ever search for what you offer before deciding — a clinic, a coaching institute, a hotel, a salon, a contractor — then yes, a simple, well-made website is worth it. If nearly all your customers are walk-ins or regulars who already know you, it's less urgent.
What a website does that Instagram can't
- You own it. Instagram can change its algorithm, limit your reach or disable your account. Your website and domain stay yours.
- It shows up on Google. People search "best physiotherapist near me" or "NEET coaching fees in [city]" on Google, not inside Instagram.
- It answers questions in one place. Services, timings, fees structure, location, doctors, courses, FAQs — without someone scrolling through 200 posts.
- It builds trust. Many people check for a website before visiting a doctor, admitting a child or booking a room. No website can look like "not established".
- It supports your Google Business Profile. A website linked from your profile helps Google understand what you do and where.
Website vs Instagram vs Google Business Profile
Website | Google Business Profile | ||
|---|---|---|---|
Found in Google search | Yes | Rarely | Yes (Maps & local) |
You fully control it | Yes | No | Partly |
Detailed information | Excellent | Limited | Basic |
Shows day-to-day activity | Possible | Excellent | Good (posts, photos) |
Builds trust | High | Medium | High (with reviews) |
They're not competitors. The strongest setup uses all three: Google Business Profile to get found nearby, Instagram to show activity and personality, and a website to answer questions and convert interest into enquiries.
When you might not need a website yet
We'd rather be honest than sell you something you don't need. A website can wait if:
- You're just testing an idea and don't yet know what you'll offer.
- You have more work than you can handle, entirely from referrals.
- You have no time to keep basic details (timings, services, contact) up to date.
In these cases, start with a complete Google Business Profile — it's free and gives the biggest immediate benefit for local businesses.
Signs you definitely need one
- People keep asking the same questions on WhatsApp or phone (fees, timings, location, services).
- Competitors with websites appear above you on Google.
- You want enquiries from people who don't know you yet — not just referrals.
- You're in a trust-heavy business: healthcare, education, hospitality, property, finance.
- You're sending people to an outdated website that doesn't work on mobile.
What a "good enough" small business website looks like
It doesn't need 30 pages or fancy animations. A solid starting website usually has:
- A clear homepage that says what you do, where, and for whom
- A page (or section) for each main service
- About page with real photos of you, your team and your place
- Reviews or testimonials
- Contact page with phone, WhatsApp button, map and timings
- Fast loading and a great experience on mobile phones
