How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile: Step-by-Step

Categories, services, photos, posts and more — a complete walkthrough to make your profile work harder for you.

Google Business Profile (earlier called Google My Business) is free. For most local businesses, it's the single highest-impact thing you can improve — often more than a website on its own. Follow these steps in order.

Work along with the checklist

Open our interactive GBP checklist in another tab and tick items as you complete them.

1. Claim and verify your profile

Go to google.com/business, search for your business and claim it, or create a new profile. Complete verification — without it, most of your changes won't show publicly.

2. Use your real business name — nothing extra

Your name should match your signboard, letterhead and website. Don't add keywords, locations or taglines.

  • ✅ Sunrise Dental Clinic
  • ❌ Sunrise Dental Clinic – Best Dentist in Rohini | Root Canal | Implants

Keyword-stuffed names are against Google's guidelines and a common reason for suspensions.

3. Choose the right categories

Your primary category is one of the strongest factors for which searches you appear in. Choose the most specific one that describes your main business. Then add a few additional categories for other things you genuinely offer.

Tip: search your main service on Google Maps and look at which categories the top-ranking competitors use.

4. Address, service area and map pin

  • If customers visit you: add your full address and check the pin is exactly on your entrance.
  • If you visit customers (plumber, tutor, caterer): hide your address and set realistic service areas.
  • Use the same address format everywhere — website, Justdial, Facebook, IndiaMART.

5. Phone, website and hours

  • Use a phone number that's actually answered during business hours.
  • Link to your website (or the relevant location page, if you have several branches).
  • Set regular hours and add special hours for festivals and holidays — wrong hours lead to angry reviews.

6. Write a helpful description

You get up to 750 characters. Explain what you do, who you serve, what makes you different and where you're located. Write for humans; mention your main services naturally. No links, no ALL CAPS, no offers.

[Business Name] is a [type of business] in [area, city], serving [who] since [year]. We offer [service 1], [service 2] and [service 3]. Our [team/doctors/faculty] [key strength — e.g. have 15+ years of experience]. Visit us near [landmark], or call/WhatsApp us to [book / enquire].

7. Add services or products

List every service with a short description. These can help you appear for specific searches — for example "root canal treatment" or "IELTS coaching" — and help customers understand exactly what you do.

8. Upload real photos — and keep adding them

  • Logo and a cover photo
  • Exterior (with signboard, from the street — helps people find you)
  • Interior (reception, rooms, classrooms, dining area)
  • Team at work
  • Your work/products (dishes, results, before/after where appropriate)

Use real, well-lit photos. Add new ones every month — it keeps your profile fresh and gives customers more reasons to choose you.

9. Fill in attributes

Attributes like "wheelchair accessible", "women-led", "free Wi-Fi", "online appointments" or "outdoor seating" appear on your profile and help people decide. Select every one that honestly applies.

10. Post updates regularly

Use posts for offers, events, new services, health camps, new batches or festive menus. One or two posts a week keeps your profile looking active. Always include a photo and a button (Call, Book, Learn more).

11. Build a steady flow of reviews

Ask every satisfied customer, reply to every review and never buy or incentivise them. Our review guide has ready-to-use WhatsApp templates.

12. Check your performance monthly

In your profile's Performance section you can see how many people found you, which searches they used, and how many called, asked for directions or clicked to your website. Use this to see what's working.

Monthly maintenance routine

  • Add 4–8 new photos
  • Publish 4–8 posts
  • Reply to all reviews
  • Check hours, phone and services are still accurate
  • Look at Performance and note changes
