Why Is My Business Not Showing on Google Maps? 12 Reasons (and Fixes)

Searched for your own business and it isn't there? Here are the most common reasons and exactly how to fix each one.

This is one of the most common problems for clinic owners, coaching institutes, restaurants and shopkeepers. The good news: in most cases the reason is simple and fixable. The first step is to understand which kind of "not showing" you have.

First: check which problem you actually have

There are two very different situations:

  1. Your business doesn't appear even when you search its exact name. This usually means a profile problem — missing, unverified, suspended or under review.
  2. Your business appears for its name, but not for searches like "dentist near me" or "coaching centre in [area]". This is a ranking problem — your profile exists, but Google shows competitors ahead of you.
How to test properly

Open Google Maps in a private/incognito window, search your exact business name, then search your main service plus your area (e.g. "physiotherapy clinic Model Town"). Ask a friend in another part of the city to do the same — results change based on where the searcher is.

Profile problems (you don't show up at all)

1. You don't have a Google Business Profile

Sometimes a business appears on Maps because Google or a customer added it automatically — but many businesses simply don't have a profile. Search for your business at google.com/business and either claim the existing listing or create a new one.

2. Your profile isn't verified yet

Unverified profiles often don't appear publicly or appear with limited information. Google may ask you to verify by video recording, phone, SMS, email or postcard, depending on your business. Complete whichever method is offered — a video verification usually means showing your signboard, your location and proof that you run the business.

3. Your profile has been suspended

If you see a "suspended" message in your dashboard, Google believes something breaks its guidelines. Common causes:

  • Adding keywords or locations to the business name (e.g. "Sharma Dental Clinic – Best Dentist in Delhi")
  • Using a virtual office, PO box or an address where you don't actually serve customers
  • Creating more than one profile for the same business at the same location
  • Frequent, large edits to name, address or category in a short time

Fix: correct the issue first, then submit a reinstatement request with proof (business registration, utility bill, shop photos with signboard).

4. Recent edits are still under review

New profiles and major edits (name, address, category) can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to appear. Avoid making more changes while an edit is pending — repeated changes can slow things down or trigger a review.

5. The map pin is in the wrong place

If your pin sits on the wrong street or in the middle of a field, customers searching nearby may never see you. Open your profile, edit the address and drag the pin to your exact entrance.

6. You have duplicate listings

Two or three versions of the same business (often created by old staff or customers) split your reviews and confuse Google. Search your name and phone number on Maps. Duplicates you manage can be removed from your account; duplicates you don't can be reported with "Suggest an edit → Close or remove → Duplicate".

Ranking problems (you show up, but not for searches)

Google says local results are based on three main things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well-known and trusted your business is). Every fix below improves one of these.

7. Your primary category is wrong or too broad

The primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals. "Medical Clinic" is weaker than "Pediatrician" if that's what you do; "Educational Institution" is weaker than "Coaching Center". Pick the most specific primary category and add a few relevant secondary categories.

8. Your profile is incomplete

Missing hours, services, description, photos or website link all reduce your chances. Fill every field that applies to you — our free Google Business Profile checklist walks you through them.

9. You have few (or old) reviews

Review count, rating and recency all feed prominence — and they strongly influence whether people click on you. A business with 12 reviews from 2021 usually loses to one with 80 recent reviews. Read our guide on getting more Google reviews.

10. Your name, address and phone are inconsistent online

If Justdial says one phone number, your website another and Facebook an old address, Google trusts your details less. Make your Name, Address and Phone (NAP) identical everywhere — website, social profiles and directories.

11. You're a service-area business with a hidden address

Plumbers, electricians, tutors and caterers often hide their address and set a service area. That's correct — but it means you rank mainly around your hidden base location. Make sure your service areas are realistic and your website mentions the areas you serve.

12. You don't have a website (or it's weak)

A good website with your services, location and contact details gives Google more reasons to consider you relevant, and gives customers somewhere to confirm you're genuine. It doesn't need to be large — it needs to be clear, fast and consistent with your profile.

Avoid these "quick fixes"

Buying reviews, stuffing keywords into your business name or creating extra listings may seem to work briefly — but they commonly lead to suspension, which is much harder to recover from.
